The son of genre giant Richard Matheson, Richard Christian Matheson has over the past decade written more than 250 television shows as diverse as Knightrider, The Incredible Hulk and Three’s Company. He has served as story editor on The A-Team, Hardcastle & McCormick, Quincy and Hunter, and recently he wrote and produced the CBS-TV series Stir Crazy. His, often very short, short fiction has appeared in such magazines and anthologies as Rod Serling’s Twilight Zone Magazine, Night Cry, Gallery, Shadows, Dark Forces and The Cutting Edge, while a collection entitled Scars and Other Distinguishing Marks has recently appeared. His latest projects include films with his father, Tobe Hooper, Dustin Hoffman, Barbara Striesand and Steven Speilberg and a number of new TV series. ‘Red’ is one of the author’s short, but sharp, scares and originally appeared in the Summer 1986 issue of Night Cry before being reprinted in Fantasy Tales 16.

HE KEPT walking.

The day was hot and miserable and he wiped his forehead. Up another twenty feet, he could make out more. Thank God. Maybe he’d find it all. He picked up the pace and his breathing got thick. He struggled on, remembering his vow to himself to go through with this, not to stop until he was done. Maybe it had been a mistake to ask this favour. But it was the only way he could think of to work it out. Still, maybe it had been a mistake.
